The questions being addressed in this text are how
punishment has affected society and if discipline has helped

shape society. Throughout the passage, Michael Foucault argues how discipline has changed
the way schools, prisons, and work places function overall. When dealing with the plague,
authorities set up a standard of rules that were to be followed by all civilians, such as closing
the town, killing all stray animals, and keeping the town under strict surveillance. If anyone
broke these rules, it was punishable by death. The Panopticon is a type of prison that is built
to wrap around a watch tower. This is made this way to ensure that every prisoner could be
watched at all times. The effects of building a prison in such form was so that even if the
prisoner couldn’t see the guards, they knew they wee always being watched. The
consequences is this type of surveillance makes it nearly impossible for the prisoner to
escape or for them to do anything without a guard or someone seeing it. This also led to less
security measures in certain places, like bars or doors, because of them easily being
watched. The Panopticon is able to achieve constant fear this way because the residents
inside would get anxious about always being watched, leading to constant anxiety of
someone is always keeping an eye on you. Foucault draws a relationship between the plague
town and the panoptic establishment because both are being watched over and controlled by
other people The people in the plague town are constantly watched to make sure they do not
leave or go outside and can be punished if they do. The same principle applies in the panoptic
prisons. Each inmate is constantly watched and can receive the same type of punishment. In
both scenarios, the people in power control other peoples lives.

The question raised in Michel Foucault’s Panopticism is
how the practice of discipline and punishment has affected

our society and the people in it, and whether changes in our society have improved. .. Michel
Foucault argues that the change in the discipline in our society has affected many media such
as schools, prisons, factories and workplaces. He explains how visibility influenced this. In
combating the epidemic, authorities’ disciplinary tactics consist of blockades of cities, bans on
evictions, killing of homeless animals, dividing cities into neighborhoods and placing certain
areas under constant supervision by the authorities. It was. But this was only the first part.
The gates of the people’s houses were locked from the outside, so they could not get out, and
there were guards at the gates, and everyone obeyed. The Panopticon was a circular prison
built around a watchtower for all inmates to watch at any time. The effect of this prison is that
the prisoners can see the observation deck, but never know when they will see it. As a result
of this effect, the prisoner must be housed in such a way that he cannot get out of sight of the
watchtower and must assume that he is under surveillance at all times. That said, there is
nothing you can do about it. Foucault describes this as appearance is a trap. There is a tower,
so I don’t know who is watching, but I’m afraid of who is watching. Panoptic instills a constant
fear of not knowing who’s watching or what’s going on around him, so he always knows he
has to act. Increase. The relationship between the infected city and the Panopticon is that
these high methods of observation and control are pervasive throughout our society and
run the way they should be smoothly.
