Based on your topic of choice, write a short paper covering –

1. Introduction to your topic, ensure your introduction has a clear thesis statement that

2. Answer all the points within the question.

3. Elements to watch out for on your report – citations, grammar/structure, creativity.

4. Ensure your topic relates back to the concepts/themes covered in class.

1. Ties are briefly mentioned in Chapter 1. Look at three different types of elections

whereby a tie occurred (example: politics, music awards, football awards). What were the

results? Based on fairness criteria mentioned in the chapter, is this fair? What is usually

done during a tie, what are the general principles applied? Ensure you cover the pros,

cons and shortcomings to the results of a tie.

2. Choose one type of election (example: US (or any other country) presidential election,

city council, senator elections, primary elections, elections involving mayors, governors,

board members, elections in sports or entertainment) and explain the basics of how they

function. How does the voting process work? How does counting work? How does that

relate to principles mentioned in the chapter. Make sure you cover how it happens, how it

impacts the voters, mention any pros/cons.

Choose a topic to run your own elections, create ballots, find 20 voters and conduct an election. Create a

preference schedule and determine results using any method of your choice. Analyze all 4 fairness criteria

Election Report:

Introduction:

Introduce the alternatives, and briefly explain why you chose them. Did you have any expectations of a

winner? Define every method that we covered and mention your chosen method? What are some

challenges you expect to face? Shed light on how the project has changed due to current situation.

Include your ballot/preference schedule here – which option did you choose (paper ballot or online)?

Why? Make your introduction interesting by presenting interesting facts about elections. Ensure your

introduction stands out.

Body:

Explain the rankings using one of the methods. Define the method and show your work.

Explain violation/satisfaction of the four fairness criteria (majority, Condorcet, monotonicity, IIA). Justify

and explain how/why a criterion was satisfied/violated.

Remember, when you mention a method/criterion, introduce it briefly, the reader may or may not know

what it means.

If you need to use a tie breaking rule, mention the rule and define it.

Conclusion:

Based on results, was your method fair/unfair? Why?

What did you learn?

How can you improve the process next time?

How do you think this experience reflects into real life elections?
