Bevan (2020) explains that AEL occurs when a listener is genuinely focused and emotionally involved in a particular interaction and when this “involvement is conscious on the part of the listener but is also perceived by the speaker” (Bodie, 2011 p. 278) AEL is when someone is intentional about giving you their attention and they feel a connection with you as you are speaking.

I feel like I do pretty good with empathic listening while I am working because I was trained to do it, but I feel like in my personal life I could do a better job. I think the biggest thing that I need to work on is minimizing interrupting the other person. I get so involved in the conversation that I start to try and guess what the person is saying which usually leads to them getting annoyed, or they get excited because they know we are on the same page…typically there is no in-between. I also think something that I can work on is not jumping to conclusion with what someone is trying to say. Sometimes I read body language wrong and I think that they are upset when it reality they are just nervous. Body language is hard for me because I worked at a prison for so long that I feel like I am in a different universe sometimes.
